Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does the name "Odyne" mean?

The name "Odyne" represents the combination of “O” for optimal and “dyne” for power or force.  Odyne’s hybrid system for medium and heavy duty trucks represents the best hybrid power solution for large trucks.

Does the unit HAVE to be plugged in?

NO! Plugging in the vehicle is recommended, but optional. The engine has the capability to recharge the batteries at any time during the operation of the vehicle. This feature permits use of the unit in remote locations where access to external power may not be available. When not recharged through the grid, the unit operates as a traditional hybrid. During longer operation, the engine has the ability to recharge the batteries decreasing down time. However, recharging using “off-peak” external power is less expensive, cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

On what type of chassis can the PHEV system be mounted?

The minimally intrusive Odyne advanced hybrid system is a modular design that is OEM compatible and can be up-fitted onto just about any type of chassis that has a standard PTO opening. Our advanced hybrid system is a parallel hybrid system that does not require the standard chassis to be modified; the original chassis driveline remains intact.

What type of equipment can be mounted on the PHEV system?

Any hydraulically mounted equipment that requires a PTO can be used with the existing PHEV system. This includes aerial devices ranging from 29’ to 60’ working heights as well as digger derricks, air compressors, hydraulic cranes and other applications

What type of emissions savings are available from the PHEV system?

While the engine is running, the hybrid launch assist system reduces the amount of engine acceleration torque required which, in turn, reduces the amount of emissions produced. While the unit is in PTO mode and the equipment is running in the all electric mode (EPTO), the chassis emits no pollution.

What is the warranty on the batteries and hybrid system?

Odyne provides a standard limited warranty and a nationwide service network.  Please call (262) 544-8405 for details.

How often do you have to replace the batteries?

The batteries are estimated to last the life of the vehicle.

What is the estimated fuel savings?

A standard Class 7 (26,001-33,000 pounds) chassis uses approximately one gallon per hour while idling. While the truck is in all electric PTO mode at the job site, savings of 1.3 gallons per hour could be realized. This efficiency results in annual fuel savings of up to 50%.

Will the hybrid installation allow the customer to achieve front and rear axle payloads?

The hybrid system with a single battery pack adds approximately 1,200 lbs to the chassis and a dual battery pack adds approximately 1,600 lbs to the chassis. Odyne can configure a unit that meets your existing payload capacity while still remaining in a similar size chassis.

What happens if I do not bring the truck back to the garage and cannot plug the unit in overnight?

The PHEV system has three types of charging methods. The first method is to plug the unit in and use electric grid power. The second method occurs if the battery is running low while the equipment is operating or the vehicle is being driven: the gasoline or diesel engine will recharge the batteries to sustain a minimum level of charge. The final method occurs while the vehicle is braking: the batteries will be recharged via regenerative braking.

How long will I need to plug the unit in to recharge?

The battery charge time for a 28KWh system is approximately 8 hours with 30A-220 volt supply, 20 hours with 20A-110 volt supply.

The battery charge time for a 14KWh system is approximately 4 hours with 30A-220 volt supply, 10 hours with 20A-110 volt supply.

What electric service is needed to recharge the batteries?

Service required is a single phase, 30A-220 volt supply or 20A-110 volt supply.

Can I retrofit an existing unit to have a plug-in hybrid system?

Yes! The plug-in hybrid system can be added to existing trucks.

Can the PHEV system include a GPS system to track data and location?

Using a data acquisition system, we can provide GPS and data tracking. These systems provide access to real time updates and past performance data via a secure website. Fleet operation management can view information to ensure the vehicle is working properly and meeting efficiency goals.

There are many incentives to purchase a hybrid system. Check out our
Tax Credits, Vouchers and Government Grants page for more information.

Our Plug-In Hybrid system has launch assist & regenerative braking. The electric motor generator slows the vehicle & uses "captured" energy to recharge the battery system.
